Japanese emcee Kaigen is an MC with prodigious artistic presence and a seemingly endless stream of consciousness when he flows gaining respect from rappers at the temple of battle hiphop in LA Project Blowed and from elders like Chuck D. This Shunsuke Endo-directed video clip from his latest album Re: bloomer is just another showcasing of his skill-set.

In his years since associating with Mush recording artists, Australia’s own Curse Ov Dialect, Kaigen has produced a vinyl EP Curse Ov The Kaigen (2007), as well as a full-length LP of the same name (2008 with additional material added) – both showing clear influences from the production cues of the Def Jux label roster and the Anticon crew.

As Thomas Quinlan of UrbNet.com writes, “Kaigen spits reality-based raps about things like positive thinking, stereotypes, conformity and additives in food using an aggressive, abstract flow.”

Kaigen’s latest album Re: bloomer, comes complete with transcribed lyrics, and features an enviable list of MC’s collaborating that are indicative of the kind of respect Kaigen has earned over the years – with heads like Freestyle Fellowship’s Myka 9, Sole, 2Mex, Awol One and Fake Four Records (New Haven, CT) co-founder and musician Ceschi -who contributes “a powerful chorus and elastic, fiery verse to this song/video Gold Lining” (Urb mag) which you can check out above.

In the end, Re: bloomer sees Kaigen spitting on a variety of social ills and the importance of hope. (Additional production help from Jel (anticon) and Thavius Beck.)
