Nomadic Wax, Multiflora Productions and pH Music continue the showcase of artists at the forefront of global hip hop culture with the upcoming event Beats to the Rhyme happening Friday, January 24 at the Dunes in Columbia Heights in DC. An offshoot of the popular Internationally Known hip hop series which served to highlight live performances by dope artists from around the globe, this time out the event features the stateside talents of the Poem-cees, Hired Gun and international hip hop champion and representative Dumi Right. The night will be scored by the sounds of the talented artisan, DJ RBI a fixture on the DC music scene. Expect heavy doses of lyrics, rugged tracks, an eclectic mix of styles and delivery or more simply stated – “Beats to the Rhyme is the name of this jam.”
About the artists:
The POEM-CEES are a crew which has stood on the cutting edge as innovators of the national hip hop/spoken word movement. The excitement of their work in Washington DC’s vibrant arts community and their fun, insightful approach to hip-hop has earned them multiple awards as well as slots on the bill with acts that include the Roots, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott and more. THe POEM-CEES have also been seen performing multiple times on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam and have completed projects for SEIU, AIG, Youthbuild & the NFL Network. Their spirit creates an automatic connection with people of all ages and they posess an energy & spontaneity that must be seen to be believed.
THE HIRED GUN is a Hip Hop/Spoken Word educator, artist and performer extraordinaire. A workshop facilitator/performer and head of the independent imprint Fresh Roots Music, his music and workshops have a specific focus: Roots,Truth, and Culture. Hired Gun has toured extensively in Eastern Europe, Africa and South America (recording the worldâ€™s first transnational bi-lingual hip hop documentary album, â€œSkillz to take Brazil.â€ In addition he is part of a collective that was recently selected to participate in the American Music Abroad program through the Department of State’s Bureau of Cultural Affairs.
Dumi Right is a member of the groundbreaking hip hop crew Zimbabwe Legit, one of first rap groups from Africa to make a splash worldwide back in hip hop’s golden age. In the years since that debut in hip hopâ€™s golden age, he has remained an active practitioner, putting out albums and performing all across the country and the world stage. He recently released a groundbreaking album, Connect the Dots, featuring some of the best MCs from across Africa. This served as a follow up to the critically acclaimed album House of Stone with appearances from a who’s who cast including the Jungle Brothers, Dead Prez, Vast Aire, Chubb Rock, YZ and more. In addition to his works being highlighted in publications worldwide, accolades have included a Berklee College of Music/Numark Musical Innovator Award and multiple Washington Area Music nominations and an award.
